The Staging Workshop

(a hands-on workshop)

The only way to appreciate and develop certain directorial tools is to work with them hands-on under the guidance of a skilled director.

Staging is a tool that is often misunderstood and misused. What most directors don’t appreciate is how powerfully staging communicates the subtext to the audience and also how efficiently proper staging can stimulate an emotional truth within the actor.

In the three-day Staging Workshop, ten directors will work with scripted material and professional actors in a process of exploration of the multi-faceted tool of staging. Day one is exploring the two-character scene. Day Two explores the three-character scene. And Day Three the four-character scene. Also incorporated into the process is the concept and practice of staging for the camera.

Topics that are covered in The Staging Workshop:

  • The Three areas of concern in Staging
  • Other Characters
  • The Environment
  • The Self
  • The effect on the Audience
  • The internal effect on the character
  • Hi Speed Directing
  • The Circle of Action
